Like the way the iPod Touch is not really a mp3/media player -- or rather not very good at it... Or so I hear, hehe.

Could this be related by the fact that many of the iPhone owners were not AT&T customers and for some weird reasons couldn't 'upgrade' their old phone number? I have no idea how these things work in the US.
